Owned and operated by Al Ruppert, Clementine’s has a rich history that dates back to 1981 when Al purchased Art’s Tavern and transformed it into the beloved eatery it is today. Al’s journey began when he left his farming roots in Indiana to provide a better life for his hearing-impaired son by moving closer to a specialized school in Berrien Springs.
Throughout the years, Al’s business ventures expanded, including the acquisition of the old Citizen’s State building in 1991, where Clementine’s now calls home. This historic building, constructed in 1896, adds a touch of nostalgia and charm to the dining experience, with original vaults from the former bank still in use for storage.
Al’s work ethic and commitment to his family and employees have been instrumental in the success of his businesses. His sons, Kevin, Greg, and Jon, along with their families, have joined him in running the family business, maintaining the same dedication and passion for excellence.
Not only is Al dedicated to his business and family, but he also remains deeply committed to the community, actively donating his time and resources to support various causes and community events. Clementine’s continues to be a cornerstone of the South Haven community, offering delectable cuisine and warm hospitality to all who visit. The restaurant’s spacious interior is adorned with antique relics and a vast collection of South Haven memorabilia, creating an ambiance that captures the essence of the town’s rich history.
